My platinum project was published in a textbook written by my professor, the lovely Christina Z Anderson. She writes the book on alternative processes... kind of a big deal.

Alternative Process: Salt

Salt prints are made by taking heavy weighted paper and painting a chemical mixture on it that makes it sensitive to UV light, instead of silver gelatin existing as the agent for paper becoming light sensitive.

The finalized images from my senior project, for those who couldn't make it to the show.

artist statement: To appreciate Nature requires participation, and to walk in the woods, as these photographs invite the viewer to do. When entering the wilderness, you experience a paradox: moving "backward," away from civility, but also forward, toward mystical higher law.

Girls Project

artist statement: I photographed women in their 20s whom I had met in my 20s, so essentially, my peers. The theme is that we, as young women, are still much more impressionable than we believe. I used recognizable poses, like statuesque body language and kneeling in prayer, to invite the viewer to infer the effect these archetypes have had over us women, and how we young women see ourselves in relation to these loaded meanings for womanhood. These photographs are about me arriving at my twenties still not feeling like a grown-up, and still craving answers.

This is the acknowledgement I got from a scholarship I won this summer; I only just found this today. A reminder to focus on the positive and concentrate on success :)

Young Photographers Alliance/APA Award presented to Madison Perrins

i recieved a grant from my university...

...and used the money to take a road trip to a childhood home I hadn't seen since I was 7. It's located in the Gulf Coast area, including Houston, the Woodlands, and a small island called Galveston. The concept was an ambitious undertaking, focusing on how our memories are often poetically incomplete. Yet these straight photographs don't seem to convey that...yet. After reviewing them over and over I felt at a loss for the next step. Aidan told me to not give up because "You took these photos for a reason." Research seems to always be my greatest source of inspiration, so before handling the images again I plan on reading up on some critical theory about memories and their purpose and meaning. Hopefully the ideas I pick up from reading will allow me to select a process to treat these photos with that will convey my original intent. Also, they are really tiny scans :)
